Fall ’10 – “LAW STUDENT INTERNS” – County of Riverside, California; Riverside, CA

The Office of County Counsel is searching for Law Student Interns who have strong diplomacy and people skills. The successful intern will be working with Officers and County staff as part of the Code Enforcement team and will be assisting professional Attorneys with general litigation.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Preparing declarations and memoranda of points and authorities, compiling exhibits for inspection and seizure warrants for submission
- Preparing pleadings, including complaints, injunctions and summary judgement motions for injunctions and nuisance abatement cases

Each participating hiring office independently selects interview candidates based on many elements of a candidate’s background including academic achievement, law review or moot court experience, legal aid and clinical experience, and summer or part-time legal employment. The Department also considers specialized academic studies (including undergraduate and post-graduate degrees), work experience, and extracurricular activities that directly relate to the work of the Department. In addition, each hiring office considers the applicant’s qualifications as they relate to its specific mission or legal practice areas.

Summer ’11 – “Summer Law Clerk” – Central Intelligence Agency; Washington, DC

The CIA Office of General Counsel has a Summer Legal Clerkship Program that allows a small number of exceptionally qualified law students to obtain broad exposure to the practice of intelligence law. Although the Office makes no commitment with respect to future employment beyond an individual’s summer clerkship, each participant may be evaluated for future employment at the conclusion of the program. Whether continued employment will be offered is entirely discretionary, and will be based upon the individual’s entire resume package, performance as a summer law clerk, the availability of entry-level attorney positions and overall budgetary constraints.

Fall ’10 – “Internship, Office of International Judicial Relations ” – Federal Judicial Center; Washington, DC

The Federal Judicial Center (FJC) is the federal courts’ agency for continuing education and research. Congress established the Center in 1967 as a separate organization within the federal judicial system at the request of the Judicial Conference of the United States. A nine-member board, chaired by the Chief Justice of the United States, determines its basic policies. The FJC develops educational resources for federal judges, provides training for court staff, and conducts empirical research in the field of judicial administration.

The Center’s International Judicial Relations Office (IJR) coordinates informational briefngs for visiting foreign delegations and provides materials about the U.S. judicial system and the work of the FJC. At the invitation of foreign judiciaries or development organizations, the IJR develops seminars on such topics as judicial branch education, court administration, case management, alternative dispute resolution, and judicial ethics.

IJR seeks an intern, current law student preferred, to work 10-15 hours per week at the FJC to provide support for the IJR Director and staff. The intern will be responsible for providing administrative, logistics, and research support to IJR and to the Director of International Judicial Relations. Tasks and responsibilities will vary depending upon IJR’s workload, activities and events.

Fall ’10 – “Law Interns” – 18th Judicial District, Colorado State Judicial Branch; Centennial, CO

The judges and magistrates of the 18th Judicial District (Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties) are currently accepting applications for law student interns for the fall semester. Interns will gain valuable experience reviewing motions, conducting legal research, drafting orders, being bailiffs for jury trials, and observing various trials and proceedings in all areas of law. Interns will also be able to attend tours of various correctional facilities while here. Internships can be for credit through school or on a volunteer basis.

Summer ’10 – “Law Clerk – Summer Internship” – State of Texas, Health & Human Services Commission; Austin, TX

The law clerk intern performs complex (journey-level) legal research and analysis work. Work involves specialized project and legal work for a Health and Human Services Commission legal support area. Goals of the project assignment are to provide the intern with experience and exposure to HHSC mission, philosophy, issues, and policies; examining and preparing legal documents, and promoting employment opportunities for the intern to explore future professional careers in health and human services legal positions.

he law clerk intern will perform valuable public service and may gain educational credits by assisting a legal services with collecting, compiling, indexing, and interpreting legal research and statistical data. Work also involves technical writing, drafting and evaluating documents for HHSC legal issues and initiatives. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Summer ’10 – “Law Clerk Intern” – General Counsel of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority; San Diego, CA

The General Counsel of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority (SDCRAA) has a part-time law clerk position for a second-year or third-year law student or law school graduate awaiting the California Bar examination.

Examples of Duties:
Under the direction of the General Counsel, law clerks will:
-Develop an understanding of and practice experience in the legal representation of a government entity and a public commercial airport;
-Assist the General Counsel by conducting legal research and drafting legal documents including pleadings, legal memoranda, policies, and codes;

Provides assistance and research to a district court judge in the Colorado Judicial Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
- Researches, studies, and annotates laws, court decisions, documents, opinions, briefs, and related legal authorities to process suits, trials, hearings, appeals, and other litigated matters.
- Reads and digests opinions, briefs, and motions and extracts excerpts pertinent to points of law and fact.
- Prepares briefs, legal memoranda, and statement of issues involved in a case, including appropriate suggestions or recommendations to the judge.

Summer ’11 – “The Robert L. Doan Honors Program and Summer Internship Programs” – New York City Housing Authority; New York City

NYCHA’s Law Department operates and oversees the Robert L. Doan Honors Program, which consists of two separate programs: …and a summer internship for law students at an expected salary of $481 per week. NYCHA also offers an unpaid summer transactional internship for law students that, depending on the law school, may be eligible for weekly federal work-study stipends, not funded by or through NYCHA.

The Robert L. Doan Honors Program offers selected … law students the unique opportunity to practice in litigation and transactional areas, and to work on a variety of important projects under the direction of seasoned attorneys. Typical litigation assignments involve engaging in motion practice and arguing in court to defend appeals of administrative determinations, handling administrative hearings concerning tenancy and employee disciplinary issues, responding to discrimination investigations, and researching housing and employment policies. The Honors Program also exposes law graduates and students to contracts and real estate law.
