Summer ’11 – “Summer Law Clerkships” – Earthjustice; Washington, DC; Honolulu, HI

Earthjustice is a non-profit public interest law firm dedicated to protecting the earth’s natural resources and defending the right of all people to a healthy environment. Originally founded as the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund in 1971, Earthjustice has been involved in many of the nation’s most important environmental battles and has established valuable precedents in cases involving air and water quality, endangered species, forestry, public lands, and international environmental law.

Summer law clerks will participate in a wide range of tasks that will include significant legal research and factual research and is also likely to include preparing briefs and motions; meeting with clients and experts; conducting case investigation, record review, or discovery; performing administrative advocacy; and/or screening potential new cases or developing new legal claims or theories.

Summer ’11 – “2011 Summer Legal Internships” – National Resources Defense Council; Multiple Locations (CA, NY, IL)

NRDC is a leading nonprofit membership organization that has been marshaling science and the law to protect the environment and public health since 1970. Our more than 1.3 million members and activists reside in each of the United States and in the District of Columbia. NRDC employs over 350 scientists, lawyers, economists, media specialists, policy analysts, and administrators in its six offices, including a new office in China.

NRDC’s summer legal interns help write briefs, draft complaints, prepare legal analyses, obtain affidavits, investigate corporate and government malfeasance, participate in policy advocacy campaigns, and draft white papers and comments for submission to Congressional committees and administrative agencies.

Fall ’10 – “SF Litigation Fall Externship” – National Resources Defense Council; San Francisco, CA

NRDC is a leading nonprofit environmental organization that has been marshaling science and the law to protect the environment and public health since 1970. Within each of the organization’s program areas – air, water, public health, climate change, energy, public land, smart growth, international, urban, environmental justice, and nuclear non-proliferation – NRDC’s experts pursue cutting-edge litigation, sophisticated lobbying, hard-hitting scientific research, and broad-reaching public education. We employ approximately 400 scientists, lawyers, economists, media specialists, policy analysts, and administrators and maintain offices in San Francisco, Santa Monica, New York, Washington, DC, Chicago, and Beijing. Over the past 35 years, NRDC has played a central role in crafting, implementing, enforcing, and defending virtually all of the nation’s environmental laws.

NRDC seeks passionate law students with the intelligence, skill, confidence, and maturity to assume serious responsibility. Externs work with the San Francisco Litigation Team’s three attorneys to draft legal briefs, research memos, comment letters and other correspondence for active and/or developing litigation.

Fall ’10 – “Trademark, Energy & Environmental Legal Internship” – Center for Resource Solutions; San Francisco, CA

Prior legal interns have helped to draft letters to the California Air Resources Board and filings to the California Public Utilities Commission, attended regulatory proceedings and industry conferences, written internal memos on sustainable forestry and biomass, observed contract negotiations, helped to index the organization’s intellectual property, presented to the organization on intellectual property fundamentals, and drafted a memo on copyright issues. Students/graduates with an interest in trademarks, contracts, renewable energy policy, consumer protection, and environmental policy are encouraged to apply.

Fall ’10 – “Legal Intern” – Pacificorp; Portland, OR

The Legal Intern will assist in PacifiCorp’s Office of the General Counsel with a variety of legal tasks in the areas of: Energy Law and Policy, Western Power Markets, Corporate Law and Governance, Contracts, Environmental/Natural Resource Law, State and Federal Regulation.

Responsibilities of this position include the following:
* Effectively and professionally communicate with other team members and internal clients.
* Perform assigned duties with a high level of accuracy and timeliness.
* Maintain organized and accurate documentation.
* Handle confidential data professionally.

Summer ’10, Fall ’10 – “Environmental Health Policy Intern” – American Lung Association; Washington, DC

The Environmental Health Policy Intern will have the opportunity to engage in-behind-the-scenes work on some of the most critical issues facing the nation. The intern will be expected to perform some administrative tasks in addition to undertaking more substantive research projects.

Fall ’10 – “Fall or Spring Externship” – Earthjustice; Washington, DC

Earthjustice accepts applications for a law student externship position in its Washington, D.C. office on a rolling basis. This position is designed for a law student seeking the opportunity to work full or part-time for approximately 3-4 months for academic credit during the fall or spring term of the second or third year of law school, on environmental litigation projects.

Earthjustice’s Washington, D.C. office serves both as a regional office for issues arising in the mid-Atlantic states, and as a center for litigation on important national environmental issues.

Position participates in activities related to the law department such as performing a variety of routine legal assignments and routine projects, studying proposed and existing litigation, conducting legal research, and assisting attorneys in preparing and conducting litigation and legal transactions.

Summer ’10 – “Legal Intern” – ConocoPhillips; Houston, TX

Summer internships are a great way for us to get to know each other! We’ll offer you the same types of challenging assignments as our full-time hires and you will also participate in our company wide internship program. This program includes an orientation, field trips, social activities, weekly seminars, and opportunities to meet and interact with upper management. Your supervisor will give you periodic performance appraisals and provide coaching and guidance throughout your internship, as will the mentor you will be assigned. Near the end of your internship, you will be asked to give a presentation about your work assignment, as well as what you learned from the internship program.

Summer ’10 – “EHS&Q Graduate Student Intern” – Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory; Newport News, VA

An opportunity exists for student interested in Environmental Law to gain some marketable experience. The Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory, a Department of Energy research facility located in Newport News Virginia, has a summer position available in its Environment, Safety, Health & Quality Division. The position will report directly to the Environmental Program Manager, and be focused on conducting research and preparing written materials on how the various environmental laws and regulations are applied at Jefferson Lab.
