The Honorable Skipper Pearson and Frank Kundrat, chambered in the Stearns County Court House, St. Cloud, Minnesota, are seeking a qualified person to fill a full-time judicial law clerk position. Candidates should have solid academic credentials and strong research, analytical and writing skills. Computer literacy is important; familiarity with Westlaw and Microsoft Word/Windows operating system is preferred. The ability to create and maintain a work environment that is supportive of culturally and racially diverse issues is essential.

Appointment to this position is through June 30, 2011 with the possibility of extending the appointment beyond June 30th subject to the availability of funding.

The successful candidate will provide legal research and support in adjudication water rights for the Honorable Bruce Loble and water masters. The successful candidate will provide extensive research, compile references on laws and decisions, draft legal memos on contested motions, provide case management and conduct scheduling conferences and other conferences as assigned by the judge. The clerk must have a JD. Experience or coursework in water or natural resource law is preferred but not required.

Continuing the post on 'Alternative Legal Careers' here are some additional areas to consider in your job search. These posts are being tagged with a new tag, 'Alternative', which will likely lead to an entire new category of postings.

As mentioned previously, these may not be the most glamorous jobs in the world, or the best paying compared to big law firms, but they are jobs nonetheless. Most don't require more experience or knowledge than what should have been gained at a decent law school.

The County of Berrien is seeking a Law Clerk. Duties: Under the supervision of a judge, researches civil and criminal motions and related legal matters; prepares memoranda regarding the facts of a case and basis of motion; prepares disposition recommendations. Serves as an ‘at-will’ employee.

Available Now – “Contract Counsel I” – Civil Service Commission, Commonwealth of Massachusetts; Boston, MA

The Massachusetts Civil Service Commission is a quasi-judicial agency whose mission is to hear and decide appeals of public employees under Chapter 31 of the General Laws.

Hearings are typically conducted by individual Commissioners and the Appellant and Appointing Authority are usually represented by counsel. The hearings are recorded; detailed notes are taken by the Commissioner; and exhibits are entered into the record. Counsel for both parties are given the opportunity to submit post-hearing briefs in the form of proposed decisions within 30 days of the close of the hearing. Based on the testimony, exhibits and proposed decisions, the Commissioner drafts a decision for consideration for the full Commission.

Currently, there are approximately 75-100 cases in which a hearing has been conducted and a decision must still be drafted for the full Commission’s consideration. The Commission needs the short-term services of law school graduates, preferably members of the Massachusetts Bar with a familiarity with labor law, to assist with drafting these decisions. Limited training is available and the individual must have strong writing and organization skills.

Working under immediate supervision, performs entry-level legal work of a routine nature. Work involves litigation and legal research; drafting legal documents; and interpreting laws, rules, and regulations OR prosecutes misdemeanor cases in assigned court. Performs case evaluation, preparation and management; represents the state/client in pre-trial and evidentiary hearings and jury/court trials; and ensures effective communication with defense attorneys, court personnel, victims and family members, witnesses and other interested parties. Receives level of oversight, training and supervision based on experience and expertise in misdemeanor prosecution.

Fall ’11 – “The Robert L. Doan Honors Program” – New York City Housing Authority; New York City

NYCHA's Law Department operates and oversees the Robert L. Doan Honors Program, which consists of two separate programs: a two-year placement for new law school graduates at an annual salary of approximately $59,246, subject to collective bargaining increases.

The Robert L. Doan Honors Program offers selected law graduates and law students the unique opportunity to practice in litigation and transactional areas, and to work on a variety of important projects under the direction of seasoned attorneys. Typical litigation assignments involve engaging in motion practice and arguing in court to defend appeals of administrative determinations, handling administrative hearings concerning tenancy and employee disciplinary issues, responding to discrimination investigations, and researching housing and employment policies. The Honors Program also exposes law graduates and students to contracts and real estate law.

Fall ’10 – “SUPREME COURT ATTORNEY” – Supreme Court of California; San Francisco, CA

The Supreme Court of California, located in San Francisco, is accepting applications for the position of Supreme Court Attorney on the Criminal Central Staff. One or more positions are one-year clerkships, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, and will start in September 2010. One position may be available with unlimited tenure to begin at an earlier date.

The Virginia Division of Legislative Services is seeking an attorney with excellent research, writing, and communication skills for an entry-level position in its science and technology law team. The successful candidate will draft legislation, staff committees, and conduct research and policy analysis for the Virginia Joint Commission on Technology and Science and the House Committee on Science and Technology of the Virginia General Assembly. The successful candidate may also work in other areas as assigned by the Director of Legislative Services. Membership in the Virginia State Bar, a background in science or technology, and knowledge of laws and policies related to science and technology, are desirable.
