Performs, in accordance with established policies and procedures, a variety of duties to assist compliance personnel and attorneys to whom assigned. Observes strictest confidentiality in all matters. Manages and assists with aspects of (a) monitoring and reviewing regulatory and legislative changes affecting applicable insurance products and producers, (b) preparing the company’s response to regulatory issues, changes and confirming implementation of necessary changes, (c) legal research, (d) assist in developing monitoring and assessment tools for compliance function, (e) use developed tools to assess and indentify compliance risks, (f) the oversight of business and financial processes from a regulatory compliance standpoint, (g) civil and administrative litigation and (h) corporate maintenance and other legal matters. Fall ’11 – “Frederick A.O. Schwarz Legal Fellow” – National Resources Defense Council; Multiple Locations

NRDC is seeking a recent law school graduate to be a Frederick A.O. Schwarz Legal Fellow. This two-year position is available starting in September 2011. The Fellow will join a staff of lawyers, scientists, policy analysts, and support staff who work to protect public health and the environment through advocacy and education. He or she will work on federal litigation addressing a variety of significant environmental problems, including air and water pollution, other public health threats, threats to natural resources, and environmental injustices. NRDC represents both its own members and a range of outside clients, including neighborhood associations, regional grassroots organizations, and environmental, labor, and public health groups.

Working under immediate supervision, performs entry-level legal work of a routine nature. Work involves litigation and legal research; drafting legal documents; and interpreting laws, rules, and regulations OR prosecutes misdemeanor cases in assigned court. Performs case evaluation, preparation and management; represents the state/client in pre-trial and evidentiary hearings and jury/court trials; and ensures effective communication with defense attorneys, court personnel, victims and family members, witnesses and other interested parties. Receives level of oversight, training and supervision based on experience and expertise in misdemeanor prosecution.

NYCHA's Law Department operates and oversees the Robert L. Doan Honors Program, which consists of two separate programs: a two-year placement for new law school graduates at an annual salary of approximately $59,246, subject to collective bargaining increases.

The Robert L. Doan Honors Program offers selected law graduates and law students the unique opportunity to practice in litigation and transactional areas, and to work on a variety of important projects under the direction of seasoned attorneys. Typical litigation assignments involve engaging in motion practice and arguing in court to defend appeals of administrative determinations, handling administrative hearings concerning tenancy and employee disciplinary issues, responding to discrimination investigations, and researching housing and employment policies. The Honors Program also exposes law graduates and students to contracts and real estate law.
