Fall ’11 – “Frederick A.O. Schwarz Legal Fellow” – National Resources Defense Council; Multiple Locations

NRDC is seeking a recent law school graduate to be a Frederick A.O. Schwarz Legal Fellow. This two-year position is available starting in September 2011. The Fellow will join a staff of lawyers, scientists, policy analysts, and support staff who work to protect public health and the environment through advocacy and education. He or she will work on federal litigation addressing a variety of significant environmental problems, including air and water pollution, other public health threats, threats to natural resources, and environmental injustices. NRDC represents both its own members and a range of outside clients, including neighborhood associations, regional grassroots organizations, and environmental, labor, and public health groups.

Fall ’11 – “2011-2012 Public Interest Environmental Law Fellowship” – Environmental Law Institute; Washington, DC

The law fellowship program is a longstanding component of ELI’s Research and Policy Division. The law fellow works closely with attorneys and other professionals to advance environmental protection by analyzing existing legal tools, developing new ones, and crafting innovative approaches to implementation. This may require considering how environmental protection is affected by other laws and policies that are related to environmental laws, e.g., those governing taxation, energy, and land use. Assignments will include legal research and writing tasks across all ELI project areas, and the law fellow may be asked to make public presentations and assist in facilitating training activities. The law fellow is expected to take on significant responsibility.

As mentioned previously, these may not be the most glamorous jobs in the world, or the best paying compared to big law firms, but they are jobs nonetheless. Most don't require more experience or knowledge than what should have been gained at a decent law school.

Fall ’11 – “Legal Fellow” – Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth (CFSY); Washington, DC

The Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth (CFSY) in Washington, D.C. seeks to host a recent law school graduate or recent judicial law clerk for a public interest law fellowship, such as Equal Justice Works and Soros Justice fellowships. This position would begin in the Fall of 2011 and be contingent on the applicant and CFSY receiving the necessary fellowship funding in the Fall/Winter 2010 funding cycle.

CFSY coordinates and develops strategies in partnership with organizations and individuals around the country working to end juvenile life without parole. From our offices in Washington, D.C., we work collaboratively with state-based campaigns, national and international advocates, litigators and organizers. CFSY provides strategic support to its partners in order to influence lawmakers and court outcomes to abolish juvenile life without parole and establish fair sentencing for youth.

The Hispanic National Bar Association ("HNBA") seeks a college-graduate to serve as a Policy Advisor. The candidate should have general knowledge of the U.S. legal system and the courts (J.D. preferred, but not required), and will review and report developments in U.S. courts and legislatures. This position reports to the HNBA Executive Director.

Successful applicants will have significant experience in policy and politics. This position requires individuals with strong interpersonal and communications skills and ability to multi-task in high-pressure situations. Successful candidates will also be able to analyze and synthesize large amounts of information in order to meet short deadlines. This is not an entry level position and requires significant policy experience. Ideal position for a recent law school graduate, legal/legislative assistant, campaign operative.

Fall ’11 – “POST-GRADUATE LEGAL FELLOWSHIPS” – Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law; Washington, DC

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is accepting applications for the 2011 Skadden, Equal Justice Works (EJW) and George N. Lindsay Legal Fellowships.

The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, was formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to involve the private bar in providing legal services to address racial discrimination. The principal mission of the Lawyers' Committee is to secure, through the rule of law, equal justice under law.

Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to equal justice and equal opportunity for all. Applicants should be dedicated to using innovative strategies (including non-litigation strategies) to address entrenched or cutting edge racial, national origin and other discrimination matters. The National Women’s Law Center is seeking a recent law school graduate or judicial clerk to work on major health and reproductive rights policy initiatives affecting women as a Health Law Fellow. This is a two-year fellowship funded by the Center, available starting immediately.

The Health Law Fellow will work on projects related to all aspects of the Center’s health and reproductive rights program area. This includes low-income women’s access to comprehensive and affordable health care, access to contraception, and refusals to deliver reproductive and other health care services.

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) and Allstate Insurance Company have created a paid fellowship with the goal of providing experience in public policy advocacy in the field of highway and auto safety to a recent graduate of law school, a graduate program in government/public policy or public health, or two or three years of work experience.

Candidate will serve as a full-time employee in the Washington, D.C. office of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, for a term of 18 months beginning on or about July 19, 2010.
